Memories

I was three when I started dancing and my dance teacher would always help me to make sure I was doing the right thing. We were getting ready to go on stage for my first recital. We are finally on stage and we start to do the dance we were taught with the teacher on stage with us and all of a sudden the lights went off and all of the dancers that were on stage started to go all over the place. All I remember and Miss Jessie grabbing me and my best friend Cassies hands and bringing us to the side of the stageand standing there with us until the lights went back on and we could do our dance and the rest of the teachers and assistants were getting the other dancers to the side of the stage. Once the lights went on again we started the dance again from the beginning. Miss Jessie was like a big sister to me and she treated me like a little sister. She helped me to learn about dancing. She also helped my younger sister, my best friend and her younger sister to learn how to dance. I danced for 15 years and Miss Jessie was the one who helped me learn how to dance through the years. This was my first year of dance and I needed to learn a lot. Miss Jessie was the one who taught me and helped me when learning a new step or anything new.

framing youth

After reading Professor Bogad's article on "Framing Youth: Writing 'Youth' in Social Context". The things that kept coming to mind was youth and how we treat and see the youth in the world. We see youth as people that have raging hormones and cant do anything out of their familiar representation. The article says "On television and film, in educational policy and political stoops, on magazine covers and in the news, we come to know youth as an entity specific from other groups -- "a tribe apart" (Hersch,1998) with customs, language and rituals all their own." I believe that we stereotype youth as everything we see on t.v. and movies. In some ways we believe that youth can not lead because they dont have what it takes to lead.
Youth can handle more than we think they can. They can lead groups of their peers and younger youth. In the article it states that "Who/What is a youth, and how has this category (youth, teen, adolescent) come to signify such a monolithic narrative in spite of its short history and vast cultural and social divergence?" I believe that the category has come to explain that they all can learn to lead and become leaders. Also, they get framed for doing alot of things because people believe that they dont know how to be a leader and are not sure how to lead a group of their peers or younger youth. Instead of adults saying they can't do this and can't do that they should teach the youth how to lead and be leaders.

Reflection KLM

K-Know: What do you know before the reading?  I know that youth work was deficit focused for a long time. The programs that they had were failing for their youth.

L-Learn: What did you learn about the history and youth practice? I learned about vague topics while reading. I learned that their are three types of youth in the communities. Their are three influences on youth development. Also learned of the types of things that adolescents (9-14) do while they are awake.

M-More: What would you like to know about? I would like to know more about the deficit approach. I would also like to learn more traditional views of youth services. I would also like to know more about the shift from deficit to the youth development approach.

who am I

My family, friends, dance group, and my two pets all describe who I am. I believe that without meeting these people I don't know who I would be.

Ideology

I learned that I am a Risk, Resiliency, and Prevention student because I used to be a positive and critical youth development. I am changing...
